Powering Documentation Automation for Pharma Labs

The Challenge

Pharma labs operate under strict regulatory oversight, where every document must be accurate, auditable, and generated with care. Laboratory technicians were burdened with manually editing documents, copying structured data from devices and databases into preformatted templates, a process that could take hours and was prone to error.

Our partner needed to bring automation to this process, without sacrificing control, security, or flexibility. Adding complexity, document structures frequently changed, lab authentication protocols were strict, and multiple third-party systems needed to integrate smoothly into a unified platform.

Our Solution

We worked closely with the client to design a platform that would dramatically reduce the manual effort behind lab documentation, without disrupting existing compliance workflows or user habits. At the heart of our approach was a browser-based application with a familiar, Word-style editing interface. But beneath the surface, we built a system capable of structured automation, dynamic data retrieval, and flexible document logic that could adapt to ever-changing regulatory needs.

Because infrastructure access was tightly restricted, cloud deployment wasn’t an option. Instead, we built a custom, on-premise installer that could be deployed directly to laboratory environments, respecting strict network and device access policies. Every element of the deployment process was designed with controlled environments in mind, including sandboxing, limited outbound connectivity, and deterministic version control.

On the security front, we implemented a dual-layered authentication system. Users log in via Okta, providing centralized identity management and role control. Additionally, we worked directly with the Nymi Band team to build a WebSocket-based integration that allows seamless, smart band driven authentication. This hands-free login method improves both security and usability while meeting strict compliance requirements.

Under the hood, the application was built using .NET 6 for the backend and Angular 16 for the frontend. We used the Text Control framework to handle advanced document editing capabilities and integrated Snowflake for structured data storage and reporting, ensuring reliability, performance, and traceability across all generated documents.

The project matured through a highly collaborative process. Our team worked in close partnership with both the client’s product stakeholders and end users inside lab environments. That meant designing around real constraints, solving for complex edge cases, and iterating fast based on direct user feedback. Where technical limitations arose, such as outdated third-party libraries, we investigated at the source level, reviewed decompiled code, and engineered workarounds to ensure stability and performance.

We continue to work with the client to expand the platform’s functionality, enhancing performance, adding new integrations, and tailoring features to meet the demands of enterprise pharmaceutical labs. As adoption grows, the system is evolving into a trusted standard for secure, scalable documentation across global life sciences organizations.
