Building a Privacy-First Digital Identity Wallet

The Challenge

The client came to us with an ambitious vision but no clear product definition, a common challenge for early-stage innovation. The goal was to create a secure digital identity wallet that gives users complete control over their personal data, but the solution needed to go far beyond a simple password manager. It had to comply with emerging EU privacy standards, operate without storing user data centrally, and offer enterprise-grade encryption. On top of this, the system needed to serve both individuals and businesses, support blockchain integration, and introduce a unique, secure authentication model.

Our Solution

We began by helping the client turn their vision into a tangible product roadmap. Through strategic discovery workshops, we clarified the application’s core features, audience, and privacy goals, laying the foundation for a secure, flexible solution built around user ownership. From that vision, TrustPass emerged as a mobile-first self-sovereign identity (SSI) wallet where users can store, manage, and use personal credentials.

Designed from the ground up with privacy and security at its core, TrustPass uses a zero-access model, meaning not even the platform itself can view user data. We built a custom authentication protocol and implemented client-side encryption that ensures only the user holds the keys to their identity. This makes the platform inherently compliant with privacy regulations such as GDPR and well-aligned with evolving EU digital identity standards. The authentication flow was specifically engineered to allow secure access across devices while preserving privacy, with secure email communication handled through SendGrid.

The mobile application was developed using Flutter, enabling fast deployment across both Android and iOS platforms with a single codebase. On the backend, we used Java to build a robust service layer optimized for speed and modularity. The infrastructure was provisioned and managed using Terraform, providing flexibility for future scaling and environment automation. We also integrated Infura to ensure seamless access to blockchain networks, enabling future interoperability with Web3 identity protocols and verifiable credentials.
